We discuss a model describing the motion to which is subject a density dependent fluid when it is not in a configuration of minimal gravitational potential in both full space and space periodic domains. We show that a disturbance of the density profile induces a motion which is well approximated by a two-dimensional, stratified Navier-Stokes sytem.
